Spark, the Hero

written by Gwynneth for the delight of Rilla Takhista

Preamble: Although meant as children's novell, Spark may tell us all some truths. This is but the first book of a series.

Once upon a time a poor shepherd lay ill in the village of cove.
He was very old and the winds from the wild sea did plague him more and more.
He had no children, as his beloved wife died long before. But he had Spark.

Spark was not his real name, nobody knew Spark's real name.
This was so because Spark was orphan. He was found by Herne the local ranger a long time ago and because the little boy danced like a spark on the flames, soon the people of Cove called him Spark.

If you would ask the local noble, but you shouldn't - the noble is a real
earnest person - he would say Spark is a do-no-good.
Indeed, Spark was a real daydreamer. He dreamt of being a mighty knight, slaying dragons and - this part did he most love - rescuing the most beautiful ladies of the realm.

Dreaming is no crime!
It really isn't, but earnest people, as the noble of Cove, would say dreaming and slumber fit together well ... and slumber and work don't.

Well... there was Spark and he helped the old shepherd herding the animals. Now, as the old man was lying ill in his small hut, Spark watched over the whole herd and this was no easy task!

Herding sheeps is no easy tasks even if you are concentrating on all the lambs, the wild goats and the sheeps... but Spark really wasn't.

Nearby Spark's sheeps, Lazeena the Dove often played her little tune of joy.
Oh you don't know Lazeena? Then close your eyes, go to the window and hear for her lovely tunes in the distance.
Lazeena was a very beautiful young lady. Her beauty rivalled her skills in singing and her soft voice.
Many knights, wealthy merchants and even princes travelled to Cove to court her.
But she shied away every time and did nay accept any courting offers.

Spark, as every boy of age - and many married men, too, much to the anger of their wives - was in love with her.
So he often left his herd alone and went to listen to Lazeenas gentle voice.

Oh she did like him.
Really! She smiled at him many times and many knights wondered why. But not only the knights wondered, Spark too did.

One day, his sheeps were playing peacefully near the dark woods, Spark decided to change his live.

"Shepherd? Me? Nay, I will court Lazeena not as humble peasant or shepherd, but as mighty Hero!"
He dreamt for a short while of the heroes Lazeena often sings of and then walked into the forest.

This is how all began... ah, don't worry.. the sheeps were gentle animal and found their way to Cove alone and the old shepherd did nay die these days. Spark found some adventures... about these I will tell you later.
